"I think I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini.” — Paul Desmond

The Morgan Dry Martini Model is designed by Erik Grieffenhagen.  Erik has spent decades studying and copying Gregory mouthpieces.  He has custom-made this style of mouthpiece for many customers in the past.  A few years ago, we acquired several antique original M.C. Gregory Mouthpiece molds and cores.  This acquisition included original cores for Gregory 18 model alto mouthpiece.  Using his knowledge of original mouthpieces and by studying the original molds, Erik developed the Dry Martini alto.

Features:

  • Rovner light ligature and cap included
  • Designed as a match to Paul Desmond's model 4A-18 mouthpiece
  • Sweet, traditional West coast tone
  • Achieve authentic Desmond tone with smaller tip opening and stiff reed
  • Made in the USA
  • A best seller for 2 years!

My New Favorite

This is a nice mouthpiece! Sounds great and very comfortable on the embouchre, fits me nicely. Playing it has been plenty of fun, in the first few weeks here experimenting with reed brand and size. After much practice(years!), correct reed and breath/tone control, I think it is possible I could achieve a Paul Desmond’esque tone. That’s the goal.

Invoice #36667 - P.O. Number 5267

Hello,
I have played this piece with various reeds (11/2 - 3) ligatures and horns and can not get the sound I am looking for (PAUL). Concluded that my embouchure can not work with the .063 tip. PAUL had a clarinet embouchure and was able to go Alto by relaxing a bit. I Have a tenor embouchure and can not tighten it up to play alto with an .063 tip. I would like to exchange the .063 tip for an .070 tip which I currently have on several alto pieces. I am returning the Dry Martini 18-4
(.063) and want to exchange it for a Dry Martini 18-5 (.070).
Thank you
John Spingarn

I know I’m not Paul Desmond, but…

It will take a while to get used to the pressure and other embouchure subtleties needed to get a proper sound with proper control from this small-tip-opening, hard reed setup, but right out of the box the sound is at least reminiscent of Paul Desmond. Whether I can truly master this mouthpiece remains to be seen, but it’s already worth the purchase for the pure joy of hearing myself. It has inspired me to write a piece in 5 4 for my little jazz workshop course 😄🎷🎶
